The Farmer’s Regret

On a stormy night , a weary farmer was riding his horse back home through the fierce weather. The wind howled and the rain lashed down , drenching  both man and beast. As they trotted along the muddy path, the horse suddenly came to a halt. No matter how hard the farmer urged it forward , the horse refused to budge. In his frustration, the farmer began to whip the animal mercilessly, shouting in anger, yet the horse remained unmoved. Hours passed, and as the storm raged on, the farmer continued to lash out in his desperation.

As dawn slowly broke, the storm began to subside, revealing the surroundings in the soft light of morning. To the farmer’s horror, he discovered that the bridge they had been heading towards had completely collapsed. Had the horse not refused to move, both of them would have plunged into the river below.  The farmer’s field with guilt and regret, realized that his actions had been unjust. The horse in its silence, had been trying to protect him all along. Shame washed over the farmer,  and he vowed never again to lash in anger without understanding the true reason behind an action.
